Duckworth & Kent has developed a 23 and 25 Gauge Vitrectomy Cannula System which allows a range of small incision vitrectomy instruments to pass through cannulas and into the posterior chamber. The systems permit a complete sutureless surgical procedure through a small incision that minimizes the potential for surgical trauma.
The system uses 3 instrument cannulas, for an efficient and versatile method for insertion of retinal instruments and infusion cannulas. The infusion cannula, which is already fitted with the silicone infusion line, is inserted into one of the 3 instrument cannulas and the other 2 instrument cannulas are used for the retinal instruments. The images below show (i) the inital setup orientation and (ii) the system being used.
The other instruments within the system are used in locating, inserting and sealing the instrument cannulas. The location for placement of the Instrument Cannula from the edge of the limbus is marked by the 3.5mm caliper on the end of the Fixation Ring with Caliper, ref: 9-513 (image A). Then the fixation ring end is used to fixate and stablise the eye whilst the needle is used to make the initial incision (image B). The Cannula Inserter, ref: 6-190 or 6-190-1 is used to assist the insertion of the Instrument Cannulas (image C). Once the Instrument Cannulas are inserted into the eye they are plugged (image E) with the Cannula Plugs, ref: 8-642 or 8-642-1, using the Cannula Loading Forceps, ref: 2-2-832, to hold the Cannula Plugs (image D). The Cannula Loading Forceps are also used to remove the Instrument Cannulas at the end of the procedure (image F).
